Whilst royal blue shirts, white shorts and white socks are Everton‘s traditional home colours, they have played in various other colours in the early part of their existence; originally playing in white, before switching to blue-and-white stripes. As clothing material was very-much in short supply in the late-1800’s, the latest Everton football kits were particularly difficult to reproduce – so new players had to wear the club’s old white shirts during matches. Chaos inevitably ensued, so the shirts were dyed black, before a scarlet sash was added because the new colour was deemed ‘morbid’.
Playing out their early years at Anfield (now home of their city rivals, Liverpool) when Everton moved to their current home at Goodison Park in 1892, they wore shirts of ‘salmon pink and dark blue striped shirts, with dark blue socks. Thankfully (or not, depending on your fashion tastes!) the club switched to their now-famous royal blue colour in 1901 and after a brief spell playing in sky blue, they switched back and have now clocked up over a century in their famous royal blue colours.
Today, the colours represent a forward-thinking Premier League club with ambitions of getting back to the very top.
