England World Cup Football Kits: Drawing Inspiration From The Past
With Russia 2018 drawing ever closer, many of the participating teams have recently been unveiling new kit designs in order to capture the imagination of their supporters. With billions of people set to watch the tournament, much thought is placed into kit design and as such, some fans take great pride in the look of their own team’s kit (perhaps even as much as the results on the pitch!)
Last month (February 2018) saw the reveal of
England World Cup football kits – and it immediately drew comparisons with England kits of old.
New England World Cup Football Kits
Whilst it will be no surprise to see Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions walk out in white (home) shirts, blue shorts and white socks, the previous England home kit was the exception to what had previously gone before; the light-blue shoulder coverings contrasting greatly with the white shirt. The 2018 shirt has fallen back on the ‘traditional’ design of the white shirt, with red trim and has been described as a ‘
classic look, with a modern twist’.
These modernisations refer to the usage of materials that allow for ‘optimal breathability’ with the Three Lions crest being described as ‘high tech’. An English rose and the St. George’s Cross also take up prominent places in the design of the shirt. The structure of the dark-blue shorts has also been redesigned to allow for a ‘better range of motion’ for players.
These new England
World Cup football kits, manufactured once again by
Nike, have been designed to offer both functionality to the wearer, as well as portray an instantly-identifiable ‘English image’.
- “Our goal was to create a range of products that even without an England crest or Nike Swoosh, would still instantly look like an England collection.” Said Pete Hoppins, Nike Football Apparel Senior Design Director, “That classic identity, with a modern edge added, is imperative to the whole collection.”
The England World Cup away shirt is based on the latest version of Nike’s ‘Vapor’ template, which is noticeable by the zig-zag knit on the neck and the sleeves; allowing for that improved comfort and breathability. The away colours hark back to the World Cup-winning team of 1966; the red shirts, white shorts and red socks evoking memories of (and no doubt, inspiration from) captain
Bobby Moore holding the World Cup, being carried aloft by teammates after the 4-2 win against West Germany at Wembley. (In all honesty, if you were to ask fans about the 2018 competition, anything beyond the Second Round will probably be seen as a success for England!)
